Counterflow steam ( Ron Jr. )

Ron,

Nice job as usual. I like to see your jobs posted here. I can't help but notice that almost every job shows that the chimney connection from the old boiler has staining on the walls from the condensation when the boiler gives up the ghost. Not on this one at least. I do have a pet peeve with your oil filter installs. They always seem to be hanging in the air via soft copper tubbing. Do you actually service these units after they are installed. Having the filter unsecured would seem to allow for leakage at the fitting that are under extra stress when changing the filter cartridge annually. If you have a reason for this that I'm missing I'd like to hear it. I'm not trying to start something I'm just curious. Your piping is dead on and clean and I wouldn't want to have the jobs that you get the fortune or misfortune of doing but they always look a 1000 times better than when you got there.

Rich

    This was a mess

The homeowner told us the system banged for so long , they just got used to the sound .

with a probe and feeder . We had a 67 float cutoff , but we saw the lady of the home having alot of trouble getting up and down the stairs . So I switched it to a probe .

Counterflow steam can get a little tricky . I almost forgot the equalizer pipe , thinking I was making one already ( the higher pipe ) .

This install was done by me and Kenny . Way too much work for 2 guys in one day , we still caught some grief for leaving the old boiler in the basement . Can't please everyone all the time :)

    Would?

it have been better to get the old boiler out or get the job running? Has management ever humped a boiler downstairs or has it been so long they forgot?

    Those old National-US Sunrays

are quite heavy. Better to get the job running and come back the next day to pull the old one out. Better yet- have a couple of the other guys pull the old one out ;-)

Nice job, as usual. BTW, the old Watts LWCO belongs in a museum.

    Management

If working for Ron's comapny (a bigger company) is like the one I once worked for you are nothing but a number to them. All they see is the bottom line for that day and what they can make tomorrow. Get hurt, they don't care they find some other sap. Ron is too talented to work for someone like that. I hope I am wrong and his company is different.

    I think

we'll be back to change a 3/4 black pipe being used as return . Looked pretty clogged up and it's way too small for a 2 inch gravity return main .

We worked non stop from 9 to after 4:30 . No time for lunch , coffee went cold before I got to it . I didn't wash my hands till we were done . The good news is I lost 5 lbs from working :)

    Thanks alot lchmb .

    Hey Rich

Yeah , I notice alot of chimney stains on the boilers we replace . You should see one that has a Blueray running for a good amount of time . I'll see if I can find a pic .

We used to hang the oil filter on steel fittings and pipe , but we had way too many thread leaks . We tried to minimize the threaded fittings on the oil line and not many callbacks so far . On this job the oil line is actually pretty secure and the filter is protected betweeen the boiler and burner . I wonder if a bracket is made for the type of filter we use ?

    Thanks alot Rich

    I've been

with my company over 12 years , and my former company almost 10 years . 12 years ago , maybe even 5 , we coulda done the whole job and removed the boiler too . Putting myself in someone elses place , I guess I would have to question why the boiler was left behind when we used to finish the whole job in the past . But there's only so much abuse I can put my body through on a given day and come in the next to do it again . I guess it's sort of a blessing when these jobs fall on a Friday .

    Thanks guys .

    Thanks Bob

The difference between a first class pipe job and a thrown together nightmare is usually $100 in more parts and 1/2 hour more work .

    Thank you

Dan and Chris . Steam is a nice change of pace and I enjoy installing the systems . Except for the heavy parts .

    I'm going back Monday

with Kenny . We were supposed to change the thermostat too , but brought a low voltage digital with us . This is only the 2nd steamer in the hundreds we've replaced that has a line voltage thermostat running the show .

    Thank you Noel and Tim

Defining Quality Once Again, Ron Jr.!

Another encyclopedic entry into how it should be done. Your work is a visual treat, Ron. I wish that I could spend at least a weekend in a house so heated.

Certainly I hope those that matter appreciate what you do.

    good show

And a steamfitter that knows how to fit pipe properly. and i'm sure you are capable of fitting up flanges without too much trouble. unless you are exhausted and can't read the ruler ! lol

    Art...

As usual Ron, a real work of art! Perhaps it's time for "The Found Art of Steam Heat" featuring the works of the pros here!

BTW, Westwood makes filter assemblies with brackets and also sell the bracket and a replacement filter top as separate items. The bracket is an F100-12 and the top is F100-8.

    Superb Quality

Ron, once again you have shown everyone the high quality installs that are done on Long Island. Many oil companies get a bad name for low quality installation but your company does the best work. I am sure you have made an elderly lady very happy.

    sweet looking job

Really another great looking job, funny how the counterflow looks funny compared to a normal drop header, good thinking, only one union too. Thanks so much for posting this.

    Just curious

I'm just curious Ron but how come two equalizers?

    Your work looks nice!

EDIT, never mind! I see now that one is a condensate return and the other is the equalizer.
