residential fire protection

have any of you guys done residential fire protection in a private residence? I am trying to offer it as an option to some of our hig hend builders but i am not sure if you need a license for it or not. Rehau has a nice system that fits the bill but do you need a license? I am in Mass.

We don't need a license to install here in Washington. You do however need one to design.

We have done a couple of Rehau residential installs. It's super easy. If you can do hydronics you can do fire sprinklers.

Here are some major obstacles we ran into:

-We had a hard time selling value because we couldn't come within 20% of 90% of our competition.

-The liability insurance is about 6 times more than HVAC.

-The approval process is long and hard and permits are expensive.

-You generally need 2-3 different jurisdictions to pass of rough-in and trim.

Other than that it's cake work.

    not sure what...

rehau has...I have done a couple of the Wirsbo/Uponor systems that use the potable water approach. Just need the plumbing lic. It is a lot of tubing but it does have some advantages..namely you test it each time you turn on a faucet and it needs no special backflow or the stagnation issues. Wirsbo did the design...kpc

The only way to know for sure is to

find out what your local fire marshall and building dept have to say...many are often shocked and don't even know how to answer you and bounce you back and forth. I would say this: Get a Fire sprinkler engineer to draw the plans. I use Mark Bromann, who writes/used to write in PM Engineer - he the man! When I gutted my 100 plus Victorian several years ago, I ran a seperate system off of a dedicated 2" service line from the street. I used L copper and silver brazed everything - what a job.....Anyway, after that I was gung-ho and really starting pushing it on the jobs...even offering the Wirsbo system, which is nice. We'll, till this day, we have yet to sell more than a head near the boiler. I have found that most folks who rather spend it on their granite and window treatments...what a shame. i will tell you this, though, everythie I read of kids burning up in a house fire...I am glad I did it.
