bovide,
You need to know the OSHA standard for excavation (or someone does) to be a competent person. You can use a trench box or angle the sides back depending on what type of soil you have. Let's talk more about this. Bad trenches kill plumbers every year.

how do I
build a timber shoring box. The job is to install an underground oil water separator. I plan to use 3" x 10" x 10" planks with cross braces. I went to the OSHA website, but pictures would be a lot more helpful. The hole is 9' deep x 12' long x 9' wide. The soil is stable.0 -
Trench box
Many rental yards have trench boxes available. They can bring it to your site and you drop it in with a backhoe.
Saves a lot of man hours building.
Here's a link to United Rental.
Good luck, Trench safe,
Jim
