    Steam season is finally here

We had only a handful of steam replacements this season till just recently . This Peerless JOT4 was still pluggin' away . The Aero heater was fairly new too . The customer decided to go all gas though . She alos asked if the new one will make the same banging sounds as the old one did .....

Burnham 7 section and gas HWH

Another long day . Paul concentrated on running a larger gas line to the meter while me and Kenny piped the boiler . That 3 inch main saved us alot of repipe time . The boiler fluepipe is temporary . The chimney was being lined today and we did not think we'd get that far when we installed the job yesterday . So we used what we had on the trucks .

    Sorry..

Sorry, about the cliche , Ron. "Nice work!" Professional as always! Do you guys go through the venting also, when you guys do the the change-outs? I don't think I ever asked you before. Do you & Kenny do the majority of the steam changeouts for your company? Gotta hand it you, lots of work for one-day changeouts! Kudos!

    Actually

I'm not exactly sure how this works but I think we generate some leads directly from the gas company . But for the most part , any gas work we do is for our existing customers .

    Ross

I'll always take a look around and see if I can change any main vents if we have the time . Before we leave I recommend changing all the rad vents after we come back to reskim and flush the system . Yep , it's usually me and Kenny handling the steam systems . We've been working together since we were in our teens , over 20 years now .

Thanks alot Ross for the compliment .

    Burnham is very nice

It always amazes me how fast a gas boiler will produce steam . And Burnham makes a fast steam-maker .

We did have to field wire the whole boiler . And we were wondering why an isolation relay is needed ? I'd also like to see a bigger skim tapping than the 3/4 inch provided . But overall it's a great piece of iron .

    Thanks Gerry .

    pitch

how much pitch do usually you put on your horizontal header piping,Ron ? must be minumum because it always looks so perfectly square . i was always an exaggerated pitch guy. a real extremist ! to the untrained eye some of my stuff may even actually look crooked , but that's where swing joints come into the equation. in any case .....as per always , class job.

Say, what Pipe dope are you using......

Always looking to make things better and easier to get cleaned up after installs. I am thinking of going to teflon tape to avoid all the oil in the piping some dopes add. Sure makes the piping easy to take apart down the road!

    If I had to guess..

I'd say it looks like Rectorseal #5, on this particular boiler. Guess we'll have to see what Ron says.

    Teflon and Rectorseal

I use the 1/2 inch Teflon and try to keep it on the first threads and paint over it with the Rectorseal . Once steam hits the sealant it just melts and is easily wiped away . It could be a bad thing if the melted ooze is left inside the boiler . But we always add a mild cleaner and skim and purge after the install .

Yep , it's the bare minimum

on the boiler main itself . This one was particularly hard - the main was pitched the wrong way to begin with . Kenny had to use his Hercules strength to prop the left end up so we could get any pitch at all .

I used to pitch the boiler main much more than I do now . But I found out , especially with larger sizes , you really have to pitch 'em severly to keep all the water out of the belly of the horizontal tees . I haven't run into any banging problems yet with the near level main pipes .

    Thanks alot Bob .
