hb smith dv8 direct vent issue

ok, i am a service tech for heating systems. my sister has a hb smith dv8 direct vent water boiler. she has a carling ez1 burner. she lives a bit far away from me to be able to go up and try to fix it for her. also, i am not too familiar with direct vent systems, as my company does not use them. she has had problems with sooting and burner lockouts. she has had multiple service calls and it still is not yet fixed. i was wondering if anyone had similar issues with hb smith direct vent systems and what the resolution to those problems have been. any input is much appreciated as i intend to pass them on to my sister so that she can tell the service technician that comes out to look for them.

Sooting is a give away, don't you think?

that something isn't set up right, not just with a direct vent system, but with any system. That burner/boiler combo should run fine if properly set up. Only thing besides set-up is to check primary control which most likely is a 60200, make sure it's a (REV.C). Previous(rev.a&b) had some problems, but still the soot is the real problem. Maybe time for a new service company.
P.S. You can download some inform from Smith. John

    DV-8

I put the DV-8 w/ the field controls vent and EZ-1 in my house last Oct. I have run 300 gal. through it so far and have removed the side panel to check the flue and there is barely a coating on the pins. I was concerned about wind and cold intake air but it was very windy this year and got down to -15 and everything worked flawlessly. I installed the direct vent exactly as it said to. I figured if I had a problem with intake air I would deal with it when it appeared, but it never did. I checked my 60200 and it is rev.C. Johns right, your sisters install and setup is questionable. Good Luck.
