drop headers for steam
canine
Member Posts: 8
I am looking for pipe specs for what I believe is called a "drop header" for a steam systems. The basice design is to bring in supplies from the boiler to a oversized header and then take off to the system. THe purpuse is to create dyer steam with smoother operation. I have heard about it from a trust co-heating contractor in my area but I would like to see piping specs if anyone has them. I have lookied in my design manuals an other Holans info and have not seen the design. I have a sytems that needs repiping an have ran into (what I believe is called) a Surge arrestor; this device is a pipe with in a pipe and purpuse is to keep the surging down in the boiler. Which hasa 3/4 hartford loop. Any info and specs would be greatly appreciated.

Look
at the boiler instruction . They will put you on the right track . A good steam man will know just what to do .What is the boiler you will be using ,call the manufacturer they will be able to help.
Good luck0 -
The boiler is already in and I am following up on fixing someone else mistake. The system origanaly was a coal fired pot belly converted to a oil burner with the introduction of a pressure cooker about 10 years ago. In years of doing this I have found that manufactures know way less than most apprentice. Do you have any useful information about the particular questions I asked?0 -
Kurtis,
Like my dad said the very first thing is look at the manufactures piping specifications. It will state what size riser or risers to take out of the boiler and what size header and equalizer you will need down to your Hartford. After that the drop header is simple. Take it up as high as you can then bring it back down into a pitched drop header.
If you go into the "Library" (http://www.heatinghelp.com/library.cfm) section of this site you will find pictures of drop headers that many of us have done. You can also do a "search" on this page on drop headers.
Good luck,
Jamie
