    another Shrapnel Artist

He was part of the mid 1980's Shrapnel Records " Shred " movement. He never really " broke out " like many of the other guys did( Yngwie Malmsteen , Paul Gilbert , Marty Friedman ) ...glad to see he's still going.

    Well...

That was fairly intense. The man definitely knows his way around the finger board, from both directions. Just hurts my hands to watch.

Saw Steve Howe with ASIA last night @ Mohegan Sun Wolf's Den. He'll be back with YES for a tour this summer. True maestro. If it has strings, he can play it. Carlos Santana was also in concert last night @ Mohegan Sun Arena. Two unbelievable guitarists.

    I don't know...

..about the " sounds the same " or performance versus " feel " ( I fought those arguments back in my day and will always be without resolve ).

I like all the players named in this post ( I had never heard that girl with the Ovation...thanks ). Fast , slow , country , metal...it's all about execution ( Guitar Hero , lol ).

Thank you for sharing that. I'm a Clapton fan, but that is a great parody and I absolutely killed myself laughing. Thanks!

Shredding is fun for a minute but for listening pleasure, I go for quality---not quantity. While I love Clapton's playing in general, nobody gets more soul and feeling out of one note than David Gilmour. Every note is chosen. He also leaves a lot of space in the music to savor the notes that are there. Shredding does not allow enough space to enjoy the experience for me.

    shredding

I was helping my girl research semie mosely (first triple neck guitar) when I saw that..the feat was incredible. I have played for 30+ years in all kinds of bands, but him playing harmony with himself was wild.

As to my personal choice for most soul in playing:

Mark Knoffler..although clapton, and gilmour rank right there too.

Gimmethe classic rock, I can't relate to the "angst" inmusic these days..my music was about fun, good times, uplifting..not complaining about how the world mistreated me

    Bob nails it!

Gilmour WROTE solos. It wasn't about 64 notes to the bar, it was about being a musician and composing music that worked with the rest of the piece.

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits had/has it down as well.

The list of accomplished musicians would be endless. What it all comes down to is listen to what you like. It's not a contest.

    Gimlour is awesome...

...but I only ever hear him on songs that are 20 beats per hour.

On this side of the coin I'd have to roll with someone like SRV ...great blues guitar regardless of tempo...just my opinion ( I guess ).

    Gilmour

He kind of makes every note count doesn't he. No shredding pyrotechnics all style and substance. That's why Pink Floyd has endured so long. One note and you know it's him, like Santana and Blackmore-unique. Without Hendrix what would SRV have sounded like? Nobody knows...

    SRV

was incredible..I saw him once, and in the middle of a solo broke the high e string, without missing s beat, slid up the fret board, dropped some notes an octave when he needed the e, and just kept going..

    Man I miss him..
