    Geothermal

There are many different things to look at with these types of projects. There is soil analysis, engineered design by an IGSHPA (International Ground Source Heat Pump Association) accredited designer, as well as coordination of many different trades. Such as getting a drilling rig or trencher depending on slinky or well sytle. Don't get me wrong, I love geothermal but... the odds are your customer will not see a pay back on this system. Residentially you typically don't get a pay back, where commercially you do. I find most people that decide to go with geothermal heating systems are doing it for the prestige of having a "green" system. As far as costs go expect the cost of this type of a system to add around 3 or more times the expense of a very high end high efficient hydronic system. The other downfalls tend to be the dependance on electrical suplimental heat. I would find a geothermal installer in your area and check the pricing with them. Also, watch your COP (co-efficient of production) on the heat pump as that will greatly affect your operating costs. Something with a COP of 3 or greater should be ok. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions that I could help with please email me, and I will try my best. Rod.

You really need to get some training for Geothermal. Some, but not all, factory training will work IF they provide continued support for sizing and service of the unit. They should also have computer programs for you to help in the process. I think it's best to get certified by IGSHPA. It's a three day class and you also need to get certified for HDPE fusion. Join your state, or local, heat pump assocation.

We are located in Eastern Iowa and do several Geo installs a month. We sub-contract the loop field installation to loop experts. (Dirt is a different science. I'm an HVAC guy, not a soil expert.) Installed costs vary, but a 2000 Sqft. Ranch home with a walk out basement will cost about 12-15K more than a 96% furnace and a 14 SEER A/C. Rebates bring the cost down another 2-4K. We add about $65.00/month to the mortagage while saving them $100.00-$150.00/month on the Heating, Cooling and Hot Water costs.

The Geo market is expanding...Get Trained...Get Selling!!
