This week in Music

This week in 1964 the Beatles set a record that would be hard for any performer to repeat. Their songs occupied the top 5 spots on the Billboard's Top Pop charts.

In all they had 45 top 40 hits in the US, 20 of those went to number 1. Simply amazing.

    Beatles are the best

Simple and perfect. There's not many groups from that era that will still be played 100 years from now. The Beatles will be one of those. Man, I have to go dig up 8 Days A Week...

    Confession....

There was a time that I was so sick of hearing the Beatles.....that I just decided to stop.

After a while away from the music, I started listening again. To say that I was blown away would be an understatement.

Hey Rick, you asked last week (or so), what's in your cd player right now. Today...it is Abbey Road. Coincidence? I think not.
Thanks for keeping the music in our minds Paul ! Chris

My spare time today was spent trying to figure out the harmonies in "I Feel Fine" (who sang which parts and when). We are adding it to our set list.

Chris, I went through the same period you did. Not sure when it started or when it ended, though it was probably during the 80's. Now, I can't get enough. I'm constantly surprised by the simple intricacies of their lyrics and cord choices.

that i said something similar to this to a fellow guitarist; I'm constantly surprised by the simple intricacies of their lyrics and chord choices

I read a book by Bob Spitz called The Beatles. An excellent read for anyone enamored of the fab four. I liked hearing a lot of background stories about where the songs came from. For example, Hey Jude was a song that came to Paul the first time he went to visit Cynthia and Julian Lennon after John had moved out to be with Yoko. The original words were "Hey Jules," a song for Julian to try and console him. The tune for the song "Yesterday" came to Paul before the words. To remember the tune he made up nonsense words to mark it in his memory. The words were, "Scrambled eggs, Oh my lady you have lovely legs.... and so on. They made it seem easy.

OK now I am Beatle crazy

Dear Prudence is amazing. How did they write hundreds of songs you can sing to? Can you imagine that it might have sounded even better if they used today's technology? Mind blowing. John, Paul, George & Ringo... Long Live The Kings

In the 1980 Playboy John Lennon/Yoko Ono interview

John says he always heard "Hey Jude" as a song from Paul to him... "you have found her, now go and get her" seems to refer to Yoko coming into the picture and John's relationship with her.

And he refers to this song as one of Paul's masterpieces. This was a surprise to me when I first read it, given the Beatles' acrimonious breakup. Not sure if this was in the magazine version, but it appeared in the book that contained the complete interview. In the book, John and the interviewer talk about a LOT of Beatles songs, with John discussing what he remembered of how they were written and other memories they brought back.

I'll never hear those songs the same again.

    Julia

One of John's most beautiful songs was written for his Mother, Julia. John was raised by his Aunt because Julia was considered an unfit Mother, because she loved to party and was not true to her estranged husband who was never around because he was out to sea all the time. His aunt doled out the discipline and his Mother became a more of a friend who visited regularly. The first time she came to see John play in his Rock and Roll band she was enthralled with his music and was walking home lost in her thoughts when she stepped out in front of a bus and was knocked 100 feet to her death. Leave it to John to turn his personal tragedy into a beautiful song.

I believe that a lot of the reason for the break up was probably related to the "business" of music and not the music itself. Sure, they were all growing musically so that it was inevitable that there would be some split. But 10 years is a lot of time for a lot of water to pass under the bridge. Even the extremely talented can recognize the talent of others.

    Check this out...

I recently saw the group "Rain". Say what you want about cover or tribute bands, but these guys were great! They started with "I wanna hold your hand", and ended with "Give peace a chance". Authentic costumes, hairstyles, correct guitars, even old Vox tube-type amplifiers and incredible 60's graphics on 3 big screens! The only detail that was wrong was the bass player was right-handed. The singer playing John Lennon sounded just like him, and the drummer had Ringo's goofy faces and moves down pat. They did everything live, and with period instruments, assisted by a synthesizer player who furnished the strings for "Eleanor Rigby" and the psychedelic sound for "A day in the life". Unfortunately, they didn't do "Yellow Submarine", but brought the house down with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". We had a blast! There was a grandpa with his 10 year old grandson with him right in front of me, and when the show was over, the kid says " Grandpa, you had some great music when you were growing up!" Indeed we did!

    Bill...

I saw Rain when it was in town last year. It was great. In the beginning I thought it was just OK. By the end everyone was on their feet singing along at the top of their voices. Well done and infectious. A memory I took from the show was, when the lights came on for intermission, my view of the audience from near the back, was dotted with the back of a lot of bald heads. The Beatles generation has matured, and is getting perhaps a little long in the tooth. (Myself included) WW
