this is only one Plumbers recommendation and I'm sure you will get other thoughts.
I would suggest you do some research and find the best heating guy in your area and hire him to do a design of a new system after doing a complete heat loss of your home.
The design may include many aspects of what the plumbers have recommended or may lead you to an entirely different approach.
It certainly seems, from the information you have provided, that you have a complex system that would benefit from a design that you could then put out to bid. It would be money well spent.
All the best,
Jack

I'm getting really fustrated and I hope someone here might be able to steer me in the right direction. Here's an overview of the problem. Original house had a furnace for forced hot air and a hot water heater. previous owners put an extention on the house that is heated with base board. two rooms in the first floor extention and one bed room on the far end of the second floor. to accomplish this they took out the hot water heater and replaced it with a very old used boiler. so now I am running two full systems. a oil furnace for the forced hot air in most of my house and a inefficient boiler for my domestic hot water and three rooms in the house. there are other factors about where the pipes run and rooms that the forced hot air don't warm as well as i'd like but i wont get into that now. the oil bills are killing me.
I have gas in the house so we are planning to get away from oil heat. i've brought in atleast 7 plumbers. some suggest running baseboard in the rest of the house and removing the forced air (with a new gas boiler) and others suggest doing a new boiler that will run the exsisting baseboard and also run a heat coil in a air handler to provide the forced hot air instead of the furnace. besides not being sure which is the better way to go (cost plays a role too), after the plumbers come and give their opinions they never follow through on sending the written estimates. I get the feeling that this is a headach of a job either way and they don't want to get involved.
So, it comes down to a couple of questions. first which is a better way to correct this and most importantly where and how do I find a qualified person willing to take on this job. I live in Nassau county New York so if anyone can steer me in the right direction I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it!!0 -

Not sure if Matt Sweeney is in your area but he would be the one to do the right job. I'll send him towards this post.
I would agree with a new gas boiler that would do the basebaord, Indirect hot water heater for domestic, and a hot water coil for the hot air side. If money is an issiue, size the boiler to do the whole house and switch out the hot air side later on.
Thats what I would suggest, with out seeing your house.
