Permanent Flue Temp Thermometer

If the burner is serviced more than once per year the heat exchanger of the boiler should remain clean.

That being said the burner needs to be tuned properly, combustion air requirements met, accurate boiler sizing and a properly functioning steam system will reduce burner cycling, oil consumption and soot buildup.

Sounds like your on the right track.

    Permanent Flue Temp Thermometer

I am now responsible for managing our neighborhood facility heating system (volunteer). We burn 5400 gallons of oil a year on our steam system. Last week, I installed plenty of venting on the mains, which had no vents.

I would like to be able to have a themometer in the flue pipe so I can easily see if the temp has risen due to soot build-up indicating the need for a cleaning. With the amount of oil we burn, I suspect that a more than once a year cleaning might be needed, but I have no idea. Is that likely the case?

Can anyone recommend a thermometer that can simply live in the flue pipe for the long term? We have a six section Smith Model 19 with a Carlin 301 burning 2.5gph.

    Check out

Wikai brand thermometers. I'm sure they have several types that will live happily at those temps. They come with a brand of wood boiler we install. 0-800* IIRC.

The Tempoint is reliable and easy to mount. They can also be recalibrated easily.
