There are two items today. One we know is a boiler temp regulator, but how does this regulate? What is the battery for? How did the chains attach to this and what did they control?
Second is a real stumper. Philco "dynamic tester". The 'probe' has an adjustable tip, and it has a speaker behind that grille. If you fire it up and run it across something, it makes a scratch noise, like a record needle. What would it test?Just a guy running some pipes.0 -
Well, the first one
is a damper operator for a coal-fired boiler. The "motor" inside is spring-wound, and the battery operates the thermostat circuit.
Not sure about the Philco.....

So there is a call for heat and the spring is wound. That closes the solenoid and starts the motor spinning. Now what? Did the damper open & close based on the regulator pulling the chains? How would it close each time the call for heat ended? This keeps the fire lower or more controlled? I am really curious about the Philco...

No,
the spring was wound manually every so often, and the thermostat circuit told it when to unwind and move the dampers. Probably some kind of solenoid arrangement but I've never gotten into one that deeply.

Uggh
Was the Philco used in a hydronic heating system with the ARCO regulator?

Guess I should have followed the link first...0
