TELL CONGRESS TO BRING ENERGY PRICES DOWN TO EARTH!

Energy trading on unregulated or "dark" markets is inflating the price of energy and Congress needs to act!

The price of energy affects every sector of the U.S. economy and the lives of every American. Especially in recent years, the price for crude oil, gasoline, heating oil, natural gas, propane, and other commodities have been at the mercy of energy traders, who have used the little-known loopholes in federal law to cash in at the expense of families and small businesses.

    energy

    We can only hope that current energy prices are largely the result of speculative trading and the shift to commodities that the dollars slide has precipitated.

    Ironically high energy prices may be what we need to begin transforming our energy intensive economy. Europeans have been paying high energy prices for decades. This insured a efficient rail system, less cars ,and energy efficiency throughout every aspect of the economy (heating included).

    This country is going to suffer dearly for not directing it's development with the finite nature of oil as a planing criterion. Our transportation infrastructure and the suburban car based development of the last 60 years lacked any consideration for the eventuality of peek oil.

    Peak oil is not a new concept, it goes back to 1956. This is math,.. in an ever expanding economic system that is driven by fossil fuel how is it that so little attention has been payed to the mechanisms of resource depletion? Within the mainstream media and political establishment it is only during periods of price shock that these bigger issues gain any traction.

    Yes markets need reform but in my opinion the problem goes much deeper. This wiki link is a good start point;

    While we may want to point fingers at times like this, we have only to look in the mirror to find it's real cause.

    I sent the petition, thanks for posting it.

  • I'm seeing no explanation of what this loophole is. as I understood it, there was no loophole for enron; they bought their exceptional status from congress fair and square? am I missing something?

    Done

    On the way up from Baltimore to Scranton, PA today, diesel prices got higher the further north I went. I think the highest was $4.25/gallon- over a dollar more than for regular gas! If that's not gouging then I don't know what is.

    I don't know

    The last time the gov't got involved in energy prices it wreaked havoc, think 1970's.

    Maybe if people slowed their usage it would effect some change.
