500' loops of 1/2" wouldn't be my first choice but for a shop like that it would do the job on 9" centers. The main issue is the bubble crap underneath the slab. Worthless!!!! I am not kidding, the grass within 18-24" of the building is green as we speak and it's been a cold winter here.

    Another one for the archives

That is...........the archives of radiant done wrong.

I ran into one this past week. A big forestry operation near here put up a new 10,000 sq ft repair and maintenance building this fall. I gave them a price for a Garn wood burning heater, the appropriate piping and mixing valves, 5/8" pex and 1 1/2" insulation under the slab. You guessed it......"You're way higher than the other guys."!! So they installed 500' loops of 1/2" non barrier tube on top of double bubble insulation, bought the biggest OWB that Central Boiler makes and got it done. There is no snow within 4 feet of the building right now and they run 160* water into the floor to maintain temps 35* above outdoor ambient. When it's -10* the water lines freeze inside the building. They told me they are burning in excess of 500#'s of wood a day. Hmmmm.......I wonder why?

They make more dumb jobs everyday.

  • I wager the 500' loops are not the problem. It's entirely possible to use 500 loops in shops if you are willing to let the temp drop widen to 30 or so... depending on on-center.

    Well, :) Huh?

    twice the $'s later...

can you HEAR ME NOW? :)
  • yup, here's yer sign.

What, you wanted to install extruded aluminum plates, two runs per joist bay and attach them to a Viessmann wall hung Vitodens 200.......

and the guy who got thew job did this and attached it to a water heater... and they wonder why your bud was higher :-)

Amazing the cost of a sstem that actually works :-)

Is this sarcasm or Sinicism?? I can;t remember :-)

    Now THAT

is a fine system. I have found with my infer-red digital camara and thermo-sensitive testing that aluminum tape works the Best out of all other radiant products.

I have opened a new business named Radianttape.net and will be selling this to Anyone.

    re: 'hot shots'

Trouble is... thats almost the norm... looked at one a while back - same but no "plates", no insulation, piping stapled to trusses! (-35 design temp) Think it works...& is efficient???? :(

    Couple more pics.........

.... of this ....... I don't even know what to call it. This past week, the owner tore down 1000 square of finished ceilings to expose all of the joists. Notice the piping in the joists and mech room.

The owner has come to the hard realization that he has to remove all of this if he wants proper radiant. I sense the legal system won't be too far behind.
