It's snowing here in Chicago but I can't help but think that Opening Day is only two weeks away. So my thoughts turn to baseball and why I love it so much...

The first pitch of the first game of the season, Wilson A2000's (the older ones that were "Made in USA"), Louisville Sluggers, triples into the right and left field corners, opponents being thrown out at the plate, day games in the bleachers at Wrigley, "The Boys of Summer".....Jackie, Pee Wee, Duke, Erskine, Campy, Sandy, and Don....playing catch with my daughters, playing catch with my dad as a kid, Fenway Park, the 1950's New York Yankees, Buck O'Neil, Yogi Berra, and Craig Biggio.....Vince Scully, ESPN's Baseball Tonight, the 3-run homer, suicide squeezes, and Greg Maddux...my old Rawlings Mickey Mantle glove, the most comfortable thing I've ever worn....Curt Flood, Roger Maris, and Lou Pinella....Kerry Wood's rookie season and every season Billy Williams ever played.....my Sandy Koufax rookie card and watching my daughter Ally play fast-pitch softball all through high school and maybe this spring at Notre Dame....Tori Hunter's glove and Andre Dawson's arm.....The Chicago Cubs and lights at Wrigley Field....taking 30 mile train trips to Wrigley Field when I was 12 years old with my friends(it was safer then)....seeing Henry Aaron play live and being at the park when Tom Glavine won his 300th.

My God, I could go on forever.

Can anyone relate?

    Oh Yeah !

Baseball is my "working vacation". I'm a high school ump. Scrimmages start on Tuesday 3/25 and games on 3/31. We still have snow here :(

The late 70's Yankees are my favorites.

    Waiting for Tickets

    Glad to see the thread!

I'm anxiously waiting for the UPS (or DHL) guy to deliver my season tickets for the last season at good ol' Shea Stadium.

    First Game

The first Major League game I ever saw to was in 1963. The Mets were playing the SanFransico Giants in a double header. It was the largest crowd ever to see a "baseball" game in the Polo Grounds. We walked in, and Willie McCovey was taking batting practice. He hit a line shot toward the upper deck in left center, and the ball slambed into a VICEROY cigarette sign. I can still hear that thing hit.I miss the old times.

I remember the real game too...looking through old cards...1972 Brooks Robinson...1975 Pete Rose bubble....1976 Jim Palmer...but what game is being played these days ?
