Bad boiler!

installer, and bad maintenance. If the piping was leaking where it connects to the boiler. And someone should have corrected it before it got this far. When was it put in?
Thanks, Bob Gagnon

    !

Just looked at a Utica PEG150BI, 150000btu boiler that set off the CO detector. Jacket is rusted, exhaust shroud is rusted and eaten through on the top surface, moisture on the floor, definite slow leak from supply where pipe and boiler casting meet, burner tubes are a mess from condensation above that left "droppings" or flakes on tubes. Checked draft, looks fine. Could a slow leak(s) over long term cause such a mess? Could the leaking water evaporating from the heat of the boiler rust out the boiler?

A quick look at the directions...

Would have more likely than not explained a bypass, and WHY.

You would think that the manufacturers put them in there just to %!$$ you off. Fact is, they have FAR more time to engineer a system, and print what works. Like Foghorn Leghorn says..."I ain't talkin' to hear my head roar, boy".

    READ the directions ! Chris

I believe the Utica PEG series

is a steam boiler. Right, Adam?

You're looking for a messed up chimney or a major water or steam leak somewhere.

Do you know where your boiler is? The PEG Utica is a steam boiler, Adam said it was leaking at the supply piping connection. Thanks, Bob Gagnon

    !

To clarify, in '91, Utica made the PEG series that could be used for either water or steam. This particular one is being used for hot water. And yes, the title, "Bad Boiler" was definitely a poor choice as we all agree that the boiler is as good or bad as the installer. Really a shame and a waste of money.

BTW, the medium of radiation is fin tube baseboard so I don't know how much bypass piping would have helped.

    Oh, OK

these days they only sell it as a steamer. The MGB has been Utica's usual atmospheric gas hot-water boiler for years.

Take a look at the Solaia series- it can be had with either oil or gas burners, and can vent thru a standard lined chimney.
