I know that all you guys are gonna scold me for this one.
Looking for a quick 'rule of thumb' calculation for heat loss on an old home. Any resources?

    Heat loss

We teach a basic heat loss calculation at our factory training program at Taco. There's a simple pencil and paper method taught in "The Compleat Boiler Room," along with a more in-depth program using laptop computers and Taco's FloPro Designer software in "Hydronic Heat Loss & Design." These classes are open only to the trade. Go to taco-hvac.com/flopro for more info.

The only rule of thumb I can offer you is "do the math."

    Good, Fast or Cheap

    Pick any two.

Drop me a line off-line and I can send you a spreadsheet I developed. It does require some knowledge of where the factors are derived.

    A resource

Weil Mclain use to have a easy to use method that was based on a chart they developed. Unfortunately, the wholesalers and reps in my area tell contractors not to use it and base sizing on installed radiation for hot water systems, typicaly 150 to 200 btu/EDR. Oh well......
