My steam boiler oil useage

Our 2100 sq ft house has 1927 windows and 85% good insulation.
Typical steam - oil usage with the hot water coil was 1060gal. For two full years after installing a sep gas hot water heater, the usage has been 858 and 786 gal with the summer aquastat at 100 degrees. At today's prices the hot water does not come cheaply!
Question: On new boilers with sep hot water heating, what is the best off-season practice? Let the boiler sit cold?

The best
The best thing is what you are doing. It keeps the boiler from plugging up. What brand boiler is it? Not all are equal when it comes to letting them sit idle. The only alternative AND YOU HAVE TO BE DISCIPLINED, is to run it about 15 minutes a week. As one who tunes up many boilers in the course of the year I can open them up and know what stays warm and what is shut down.
