I just spent the last two days at the hospital with my 16yo daughter who was getting her appendix taken out and a huge ovarian cyst drawn. An event like this is stressful, but, in a neat little twist, was made more tolerable by my heating service business. The Family Doctor that we saw first is a very good customer of mine for going on 20 years now. She was seen in a clinic that I helped build and now maintain. The nurses there are all customers of mine. At the hospital, the ER doctor is a good customer of mine…we have had a great working relationship for more than ten years now. The ER nurse is a good customer of mine. The ER CNA is a good customer of mine. The surgeon is a new customer of mine this season. The Anesthesiologist goes to my church. The surgery nurse is a long standing customer and goes to our church as well. Several of the other nurses that we dealt with through the weekend are customers of mine. Even the security guard at the ER is a customer. Some of them were called away from family events and quiet evenings at home to come and take care of her. She received the best of care and, I think, maybe just a tad above average personal attention!

It’s true…small town atmosphere will either make or break you, depending on your reputation. It was gratifying to me to have the ER Doctor ask me for business cards to leave in the break room! ‘Course they all gave me heck ‘cuz now it was my turn to pay the “service man.”
It isn’t all one way out there…and it isn’t all about money either. Sometimes it's good to be reminded that we are participating in a very personal economy, and that the service that we provide is an important one. I know this weekend and the treatment we recieved will temper my attitude when next my phone rings and somebody needs help.

    I agree

First, I hope your daughter gets well.

I live in a very small area as well. I've usually tried to be as good to people as I can. I've noticed, upon reflection, that when I'm "fighting" the world fights back and things come harder. When I keep a good attitude towards life it treats me better.

Like you, my doctor, dentist, optometrist, mechanic and numerous restaurants are my customers and friends who take care of me when I need them. Shortly after I became a single custodial parent, my son became deathly ill. I lost a lot of work in October & November, prime time for me, and ran through every penny I had and then some. My true friend who rented me a house, forgave 6 months rent. Groceries appeared on my doorstep. Others held paper for months at their own insistence. It proved to me that you reap what you sow. I thank God everyday for giving me friends and the proper attitude towards life.

We all need someone we can lean on

    Tony,
I agree 100% with your statement,
"When I keep a good attitude towards life treats me better"

Put your arm around your customers, friends and family.

You never know when your going to need a hand getting up.

Growing up my mom ran into struggles taking care of my brothers and I. Family and friends extended themselves until she got onb her feet again.

It's what makes a person beautiful on the inside, the ability to recognize and help a friend in need.

    Keith
