This story tells the tale well- we use more, have less, NA supplies are dwindling and there is no simple solution. There are small bright spots in the industry which will satisfy (sic)the oil/fuel/gas addiction locally or for specific geographic areas - but as a continent (read "one large consumer")- we're pooched. We are lights years away from adequate LNG regasification capacity (on both seaboards). Price controls work for awhile - even brutally higher prices per gallon, but we tend to acclimatize ourselves and renew our thirst for gas/diesel and continue to drive as much as always in a relatively short time. For instance - I really like the USA highway system, from my location (SE British Columbia) I could nip down to the interstate and head east or west faster and cheaper than staying in Canada. I would save about 50% in fuel costs. Now with diesel at $3.80/gal (Spokane prices yesterday) that price point is now about 10%. But what it really shows me - is that our oil suppliers recognize that we will pay to sit in our vehicles; and we can debate oil supplies, gas supplies, refining capacity and distribution, Alberta oil Sands (Our Saviour??) all we like - high prices are here to stay. For all fuels!
