So Steven's boiler couldn't have been installed with Viton seals? What's your point? Smith has re-inforced the graphite seals for just that reason.

    HB Smith 28 series, RTV

Is ok to use RTV on rubber gaskett to help assemble boiler? Any warranty concerns?

    Since about

2003, the 28 uses a graphite composition seal. And. No. They don't want RTV on the boiler sections.

    From the Reed Institute

"Before installing the hydronic seals, wipe the machined port surfaces with a clean rag to remove any grit or dirt. Place the seals in the recesses of the back section. NEVER use tape, grease, or adhesive to hold the seals in place. Chemicals in these products may cause the seals to deteriorate.

The tabs of the upper seal fit into slots in the casting. This feature helps to maintain the seals in place during assembly and allows you to check the positon of the seal after the sections are assembled. The lower seals may be stretched just before assembly to elongate them, insurining a snug fit."

So, to answer your question, no.

p.s. Smith recommends using the same port seals the boiler was originally assembled with. But the boiler may use the graphite seals if the port surfaces have been machined smooth. keep in mind that renewing with graphite seals will effectively "lengthen" the boiler's overall length fractionally. Think piping!

    Rubber?

I have not seen a rubber gasket for a 28 in a few years. And I have done MANY 28s.

Love the graphite seals, but they are very unforgiving of mishandling.

    My Point.

In my experience, I have not seen or installed a 28 with Viton in years.

Perhaps, if this person's boiler was installed with Viton, the install kit that was used was from before the graphite became available, even though the boiler itself may have been from new stock..

Yes, I know the graphite system has been made more robust.
