Dunham return trap #8A

Ever heard of a Dunham return trap #8A? Can these be replaced or repaired? We are working on a 2 pipe steam system and the returns are not getting hot. When we first arrived the boiler was flooded. Is this because the condensate was not returning and the boiler took on fresh water to make up for this. We removed the trap and cleaned as much "mud" out as possible. It seemed to help as the return is getting hot now but it probably needs to be replaced. Can someone explain to me exactly how this trap works?
