Good source for piping techniques in steam fitting?

I'm looking for a fairly rudimentary treatise on steam fitting. What is the best way to work a branch through walls alrady installed? What calculations can be made to make up angles and lengths for reaching around rafters to the upper floor joists? Is there something in the Library which you may know of?
Apart from common sense I wonder whether I can make my piping easier (not the actual brute force and flexibility it takes) by using math for pipe nipples between 45 's ^.

I just noticed that in the first pdf of Jonhson's Handy manual that there is a chart for 45^ pyramids with side lengths in feet but I can't see how the number work.
