Interesting steam pipe layout - ideas?
I hope someone can help me out here. I am trying to figure out exactly why this part of my system was designed the way it was and how it works. Before I start, please feel free to ask for any details I may have left out. Our "Boarding House" was started in 1926 and added on several times until 1940 when it reached as size of 7900 square feet. There a 4 mains run from the boiler, 3 of which are 1 pipe mains. The 4 is the one I am a little confused about. Instead of trying to explain the layout, I made a sketch of it and saved it as a jpg file and attached it. Please have a look and I will answer questions as they come. Thanks. Jon.0 -

I can't figure out your sketch. Is the red pipe a main? What is the gray pipe? Are these all horizontal or are some vertical?

The red line is the 3" main line which progressively reduces to 2" where it leaves the room. The room is a bit different in that the floor is about 3 feet above the adjacent basement floor. Where I started the line would be the ceiling of the basement. It goes through the wall, then travels vertically about 7 feet where it travels horizontally around the room just below the ceiling (the room has a 13 foot ceiling - it's actually a bathroom with a second bathroom above it). Where I marked the vent is where it travels 7 feet back down to converge into one line with the gray lines and return to the boiler (with a gorton #2 in the riser just before the boiler). There seems to be some sort of check valve downstream from each radiator. I'll try to tske some pictures tomorrow and post them.0
