new boiler - old problems - hissing and water loss
Hi,
I've been reading threads on this issue and I'm not making progress. We have a one pipe steam system with a new boiler. Although I cannot find any leaks, the system is losing water. We also have several radiators with vents that hiss. The hissing is especially loud at times when the heating system is working to raise the house temp more that a couple of degrees. I have brand new Gorton vents on the hissing radiators and they are pitched correctly. Draining a bit of water from the boiler does not help, and the pressurtrol is set very low. Please let me know what else I can try because I want to be sure that the water loss does not cause the premature demise of another boiler. Thanks very much!0 -

Hi,
I haven't found any leak (there are no buried returns) and the boiler is correctly sized. The boiler was installed in October and this problem only began in the past couple of weeks. There was never any problem with adequate heat (even on very cold days).
Thanks.0 -
Warranty??
If it's a new boiler, must still be under warranty, right? What does the installing contractor say?0 -
we keep trying that
We've had them out a few times since they installed it and there always seems to be a different problem. They have the best reputation in our town but I don't think they are true steam experts like many people on this forum so I'm trying to extend my reach for possible help.
Thanks!0 -
got any pictures?

Make & Model
It would help greatly if you mentioned the make and model of your boiler. Do you have the installation mamual for your boiler? Most manufacturers have instructions for the way that they want the near boiler piping. Many of te installation manuals are available on line. It would also help if you told us if it was oil-fired or gas-fired.0 -
Re: losing water
If you are losing water and no signs of water on floor or high water levels in boiler that you have to drain off then I would say it would have to be leaking returns. ? are there underground returns that you can't see. They would be the likely problem. Regarding hissing, a few others on this site are better versed than I but I would think you need some main venting as the new smaller boilers generate steam much faster than the old beasts and need some good size venting other than just rad vents. Just my nickels worth, Tim0
