DIY Low Loss Header

Hot Rod I would estimate an hour to build one. Cost of materials for a 2" header with 1" branches is around $97.00. I guess it is up to the heating contractor to determine the value.

We generally install a microbubble absorber downstream of the boiler which adds another $84.00. Add a stainer on the system return and thats another $36.00.

So we effectively have 2 means of air separation, 1 at the LLH, and one at the microbubble absorber. As well as 2 means of dirt separation.

From what I can tell the Caleffi unit has no ability to separate microbubbles, and would be disadvantaged at dirt seperation as well.

My total cost is about $272 for my method.

Just playing devils advocate here. I have utmost respect for both you and Caleffi products.

What is the reason for a 4" header on the Caleffi LLH? When I attended Siggy's seminar he told us 2 pipe diameters over the branch circuits. Just want to learn if there is something I don't know!!

This is how we have been doing it. Works well. Sorry for the crude drawing.

    there are some critical dimensions

This link will lead you to the originator of the hydraulic separator :) It explains the concept and features.

With the Caleffi you get a nice insulated shell :)

HR: Do you think even with the insulated jackets the Callefi's are worth the extra cost? I like them but it's tough to justify the cost (close to $1000) when one can get the same effect by doing as Josh and others (myself included) do using tees.

    I actually ...

e-maoled Lee @ Earthlee headers about making them...she was a bit shy about what all was involved. that could be a reasonable cost alternative.....kpc

What does it cost to build one?

that would match the Caleffi. if you figure 3 or 4" copper caps, tees, etc. plus the labor.

There is some technology inside the Caleffi that you probably don't have in the homemade ones.

The price of the Caleffi should be built into the bid, just as the boiler and other components.

Why not check out PHP's version. Available in 1-1/4 inch pipe with up to 200,000 Btuh capacity with up to 6 supply/return ports. An advantage is that you can connect your supply and return to either side,or have two heat sources connected to the LLH. By alternating the pumps, you could supply the LLH from either side simplifying your system piping.

    cadillac or ford

all depends on the price of the job. on a marginal job , you cannot use cadillac or equal type equipment. a field fabricated assembly will work although maybe not as well & definitely will not be as pleasing to the eye. but we do have to eat , too & are not all philanphropists . the installer cannot give all the profit to the equipment vendors & manufacturer. we are in it for the MONEY, too !! plwood & diamond plate are not the same but both will do the job.
