Noritz tankless Freeze Damage

They have ceramic heaters on the heat exchangers but, they don't work with out electricity. Some models will cycle burner off internal stat yet again require gas & electric.

In addition all the units, except direct vent are supposed to have a vent backflow damper.

I have heard this happening a lot on new homes that are plumbed but have intermittant power, gas or heat.

Many regular new home installers, because of this and thefts, have started to install rough in units made up in shop that also tie the Hot & cold water together with the intall kits and a check in the middle. They then return when home is secure and operational and hang unit.

    Noritz freeze Damage

    Has anyone ever had a Noritz or other brand tankless water heater freeze and burst the heat exchange even when the heater is in a conditioned space. I had one (my first install) freeze from the cold air coming in through the vent. The install instructions never had any information on freeze protection. Power may have been off because of contruction in the house. I know when the units are powered they protect themselves from freezing, but what about power failures ect. It wasn't very cold when this happened either.
