mixing valve

this is a great way to load or unload a buffer tank. Tests have shown up to 50% more stored energy this way.

    3 way mixing valve

I was on Viessmann's UK website checking out piping diagrams(yeah I'm a freak for piping diagrams) for their heat pumps and came across where they are circulating supply water from the WtoW unit into the AB side of three way mixing valve where A is flowing towards of plate exchanger and B is flowing toward a buffer tank. Is a 3 way mixing valve capable of splitting flow this way?

    Divert

I don't think so. I would think you need a diverting valve, more$$$.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

They are using it as a diverter valve (1 inlet, 2 outlets) to send water to the indirect HWS tank and/or the buffer tank.

Most 3-port valves used in heating are mixing valves and need to be installed with 2 inlets, 1 outlet. For this example, you could do it by installing the 3-port valve on the return with the common port, AB, on the return to the heat pump, i.e a mixing valve installed in diverting mode.

3-port globe/up-down valves usually don't like being installed as diverting valves; the pressure difference generated by the pump across the movable plug will stop them working as intended.

You may be able to install a rotary-shoe 3-port valve as a divering valve, but it depends on the valve. You'd need to read the installation instructions to be sure.
