Primary Control problems

1)Disconnect the F-F leads from the 8184 and have a jumper ready. 2) Start the burner and then jump the F-F terminals together. 3) If the burner stays running past the 45 second lockout then odds are the control is good. 4) Check the ohms at the yellow wires you just took off the F-F terminals...it must read under 1600 and be steady. If it bounces over 1600 for 45 seconds...it'll lock out. If the reading is high...over 1000...try loosening the lock screw on the cam in front of the transformer and moving it ever so slightly one way or the other and watch the ohm meter. It may change the reading up or down and you'll find a sweet spot to leave it. If there is no real change then pull the drawer and clean the turbulator plate at the end. It is designed real tight and it doesn't take much dirt to block the light from the flame reaching the cad cell.

The burner will not recycle with the jumper in place if you take too long with your readings.

The 8184G4009 is a functional replacement for the OEM control and will work just fine.

If the ohm reading is good and steady under 1000 and doesn't change with an extended burn, then you probably have a fuel delivery problem such as an air leak into the oil line. A cracked fitting, deeply scratched line, failed check valve, old filter can, dirty filter, loose fitting, teflon tape, etc. Tough to find...call a pro. During the day, with the boiler running more often at the higher setpoint and DHW use the air leak doesn't show up enough for flame failure for 45 seconds. At night, after the setback and a longer rest period, the leak is enough for flame failure beyond 45 seconds.

Remember that any change to the burner settings will result in a possible dirty boiler and potentially dangerous emmissions.

The smoke indicates that the burner fails to ignite for 45 seconds and then locks out. Dirty electrodes, wimpy transformer, loose wires, dirty turbulator, plugged nozzle, weak pump, call a pro.

    Primary Control problems

Recently my Primary Control unit on my Weil-McLain WTGO-4 Boiler with Weil-McLain QB-180 burner has been locking out and needing to be reset at least once a day. It has happened the last 3 nights in a row and has only been happening in the middle of the night when I have my programmable thermostat dialed in to cut back to 62 degrees for the night. When I reset it, I get a huge cloud of smoke and it runs normally until the next night! The boiler was cleaned and "serviced" about a month ago. I just got filled up about 2 weeks ago....other than that everything has been status quo. This is my THIRD primary control unit in about 6 years. The current unit is a Honeywell R8184G4009. The first 2 were whatever W-M shipped with the unit...can't remember exactly, but they were not the same Honeywell I currently have. I thought maybe I was out of oil again, the filter was clogged, but with the recent cleaning and oil fill up it just can't be....plus the unit runs fine after I reset. Could it just be another bad primary control? I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out and need a full night sleep. Thanks in advance for the help!
