The Old & The New
If I would have posted (using my opinion) about how terrible this looks,,,, the replies would be "not too bad", "looks OK to me" or the like.
So this time I posted basically without any negatives,, and the replies have been obvious,, does anyone else ever find this? LOL.

Dave

Just snapped this.
pic now as there is not much pedestrian traffic.
Our fair city is trying to embrace a heritage look for our main drag. This is one of the oldest retail stores in our city(look to the top & bottom of the left side).
I have no idea what the equipment is, but all 3 were cycled off with an outside temp of 26ºF.
What do you guys think?

is that's Canadaian's way?
Isn't that Canadains' urinal drains? Just kidding...0 -
Could be
water heaters or........could be boilers or furnaces.
Next time you go by, count the gas meters.
Could be three boilers with indirects or three furnaces and they still use atmospheric water heaters.
I will say this. If the proprietor of that operation dumps a bunch of rock salt on the sidewalk, those intakes will be bringing some nasty stuff back to whatever he has burning in the basement.

Heard that Mark, good point
I was in that basement many years ago,,and it was HW heat then.
Meters must be in the basement as I can see the reg to the left.
I guess the birdcrap sprayed on the window will be a giveaway to no screens too.
As I`ve said many many times here,,if I even thought of doing a job this way, I would be S&PO.

And are those intakes
high enough above the maximum expected snow accumulation?

Y`know,,, after sleeping on-it,
whatever equipment these are serving, what else could the installer have done??
Although I agree with Mark and Frank`s observations,, here`s what he/she was faced with; pigeonhole type storefront (w/other privately owned stores on each side),,all glass in front,, and a very old building w/ 4 stories of apts. located above.
I guess on 2nd thought,, I can see this was the only realistic & cost effective option available.

No Way...
There is always another way... it may not be cheap, easy, or the quickest, but there is always another way. I'd be embarassed to put my name on that install.
Edit: And as I looked at the picts again, I'd have looked at that short roof over the entry/ display area... are the windows operable and what it your local code for clearance? Poke 'em vertically out the roof, paint them to match... 100 % better than the existing.0 -
Interesting observation Brian K ,
and I agree,, there is always another option possible,, but I would think ripping apart the apts above would blow the budget.
Yes, those windows are operable, and the exh. vents do pass the 4' rule,, however I wonder about the crank-out awning the store uses in the summer.
Edit- That small "roof section" you see above, is simply an eyebrow type-thing built on the facade.

don't most buildings with a front...
also have a back?
Or was that too far away? Or made of brick?

Most of those downtown buildings are build on a 0 lot line, those intakes/exhasts protrodue in the city's R.O.W. Hope the city/village gave permission. Not to mention if it's in any kind of historical district. Those look terrible!!0 -
... as a Historic Preservation \"Commissioner\"
I agree that this would be a "less than ideal" solution from a historic preservation and architectural perspective.
I am one of 7 commissioners on our city's HPC, and although it would likely be permitted especially if not economically feasible to do differently, I suspect everyone would have reservations about this install.
I also feel sorry for the first pedestrian that cracks a knee or trips over these while distracted by the window display. Although I guess sprinkler standpipes also pose the same hazard. At least they look "appropriate" though.

Not on the subject, but.....
...Al - are you any relation to Big Ben Roethlisberger?0 -
My standard answer....
I am sure I am, but I don't know him
(As an aside, he is from Ohio, my paternal side is from Pittsburgh though)There was an error rendering this rich post.

It is not......
....a last name you hear very often!!!
My roots are in Pittsburgh, as well.0 -
another way? maybe not
lengths of run/elbows are dictated by the i/o manuals
and.......in order to pass inspection, we had an inspector tell us to remove the critter screens from ours because in winter, they cause ice build-up and render the furnace inoperable. but, they should be replaced every spring as part of the maintenance schedule0
