it could be that your t-stat is being satisfied before the second floor warms up.
It could be too close to one of the first floor radiators and maybe just by relocating it might help.

Help with one pipe diverter T system??
Recently found this forum and finally understand, I think anyway, how my heating system works but questions arise in the second story of my house. The upper floor never gets no where near as warm as the lower and neither do the radiators. What do I need to check for in order to find the problem? I have bled all the air out and checked the pressure on the boiler, around ~19psi. There are no zone valves just the circulator. It is a dry base oil fired new yorker boiler, 114,000 BTU and the house is around 980 square feet. The thermostat is centrally located on the first floor. I can supply pictures and measurements of piping and such if needed or link them here. Thanks!0 -
is the water temperature correct0 -
Some ideas...
Did the system ever heat evenly that you know of? What kind of radiators do you have?
If you can rule out air, obstructed radiators, imbalances caused by changing insulation levels around the house, the next thing I'd look at is flow. Monoflo systems need adequate GPMs. Are all the valves along the mains fully open? Are there any capped monoflo Ts? If you can rule all of that out and the system once ran fine, I'd say that the impeller in your pump would be the next place to look...0 -
I agree with Uni R,
have seen many a bad impeller.
Saw guys spend days suspecting the prob was air(to the customers shigrin), only to eventually narrow-it down to that!

Water temp is good...I have the aquastat set for 140-160 and I have tried 160-180 with same results.0 -
This is what I believe to be the problem personally. Is there any way to add a second t-stat and zone valve for upstairs?0 -
It has always been like this since I purchased the house 5 years ago.0 -
For kicks perhaps I should at least price out a new circulator.0 -
THANKS THANKS THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES!!!0 -
No prob Brent,
that is what we`re all here for!
With some more info, we may be able to help you choose another circ,, if you need one.

More help please
I have a buddy of mine that has been doing heating and cooling for years but he seemed a little stumped when I mentioned the one pipe system. My intention is to run a second zone upstairs (right now the upstairs is off of the main pipe and never heats up as much as the first floor) What information do I need to provide to you guys on sizing a new boiler and questions such as, should I leave the old cast iron pipes in place? New circulator pump and how big? I can provide plenty of pictures if necessary. The attached picture shows some detail of the boiler and the cast pipe that the copper routes into. The boiler is a NewYorker 147,000btu Thanks!!0
