1-1/2\" TRV's for CI Rads
Steamhead (in transit)
Member Posts: 6,688
at some point, Detroit Lubricator Co. became part of American Radiator Co.
The one on the wall rad looks like it has a washer and seat, so the conversion to a TRV should be easy. The other one may be a rotating plate or sleeve type, so converting it may be more difficult.
See you all at Wetstock!

1-1/2\" TRV's for CI Rads
Hello fellow Wallies:
I know we have discussed this in the past but I am still in need of finding a reliable source for 1-1/2" TRV's for CI Rads. The largest size that I have access to is the 1-1/4" (Oventrop & Danfoss, etc).
Most of these applications are for either gravity conversions or already converted systems. Mark and I have discussed this and believe that someone posted on this (but neither of us remember who or when). I believe that the existing valves on this particular project are Crane. I am not confident due to the valve markings are painted over.
For some reason I thought somebody posted that there is a product available where you can replace the internal components (conversion kit) of the valve and a TRV for the handle.
Tunstall? Macon controls?
Thanks in advance!0 -
If the system is converted why do you need such a large diameter valve?? bushings? HM.0 -
Richard
The risers coming up from floor level are not accessible (tight crawler) and pretty much locked into place. If we were to do a bushing it may change the dimension too much and not line up correctly. I guess that we could make one up and determine if that is the direction we would like to pursue.
To answer your question...No, they do not have to be 1-1/2" to carry the load but this is the pipe size we are dealing with on the risers.
Thanks for your input...Now come down from the mountains and join us already.

Macon Conversion Kits
EZ-Fit Conversion Kits
I have never used one, but it looks like a good way to go in this situation.0 -

Yes, this is the information I was referring to. Unfortunately I could not determine the make of this valve yet to see if it will be compatible to convert with their product offerings.
Thanks for the link.0 -
TRV's
There are no 11/2" TRVs available in the USA. You can use a metric TRV from Oventrop, but there are tricks to making the threads work (Rorke's Rule). Why not revalve the radiator with a new wheeled valve, and install the TRV's on the rads with smaller supplies?

What the heck....
...is Rorke's Rule?????0 -
Paul
There are three rads in this south facing sunroom which tends to overheat because of solar gain and only one main thermostat in a centrally located hallway. All three individual rads are 1-1/2". The remainder of the house is comfortable without the need for additional TRV's at this time.
Since you have worked with the metric products are they offered from our N.A. manufacturer's reps?
Is Rorke's rule: 10x tef tape, dope, hemp? etc?
Thanks to everyone for their input.0 -

The search function easily brings up the following thread from Tunstall, as well as other threads with the same information:
http://forums.invision.net/Thread.cfm?CFApp=2&&Message_ID=319260&_#Message319260
They will sell you a converted manual valve, you do not have to do the conversion unless you want to.0 -
Thanks
I already did the search function before starting this thread. But I am also looking to see if anyone else has come across an alternative yet.
I contacted them and they put me in contact with a local rep...very nice and helpful gentlemen. I will also contact Mr. Tunstall direct and go from there.
As we all know It pays to wander off the wall...
Thanks anyway.0 -
Rorke's Rule
Chris Rorke, from Blueline Supply, Jackson Hole WY (307) 733-3953 came up with a method of fastening metric to BPThreads, to be able to use some of the metric valve bodies. It involves 7x wraps of Kanga teflon (a heavy duty tape) and either hemp or some dope under the tape. Too many wraps and it won't work...too few and it will leak.... Chris is an ME and an acknowledged expert in hydronics. I've used the method many times over the years. I'd urge you to speak with him before trying it...or leaks are likely.

Thank
you for this valuable information Paul. I know Mr. Rorke...Mark has mentioned him in the past and I met him at Wetstock in 2003.
Sounds like a fine line but one we are willing to walk.
Take care.0 -
Wetstock Denver 08
Mr. Rorke attended the last Wetstock held in Denver. He'll be in France in April and not attending. I'll be there, though!!

We
are all looking forward to seeing everyone this year in April. It should be a enjoyable experience for all who attend Wetstock '08.
Sorry to hear that he will be unable to attend. I'll pass this along to Mark that you will be in attendance.
Thanks again and congrats on the recent article in the Reeves Journal...Or at least that is where I thought I read it.0 -
