A number of very good steam men here have converted single stage boilers to two stage with very good results. They have reported consistant improvements in comfort and often significant gains in fuel efficiency. Depending on the boiler and burner design, I have seen significant gains also. On a power gas burner, boiler, moving to a modulating burner can show considerable improvement since, flame efficincy is generaly maintained, but heat transfer often improves. Burner cycling is greatly reduced, reducing this major source of inefficiency in boilers. Bare burner atmospheric also seem to gain in many applications. Defimitely have a professional do the swokr so complete testing can be done. Your boiler may already be equipped with a two or 3 stage gas valve and just neds additional operating controls.

hi-low gas burner-1 pipe steam
i wonder what benefit might be had by switching to a "hi-low" control valve on my 1050,000 btu 1-pipe steam system.
right now i have the vaporstat set to keep it between 4 oz. and 12 oz.as a result it has to cycle the burner to maintain this pressure range.is this using more gas than having a 2 stage gas valve of maybe 75%--100% [or whatever is available] which would have a 2nd vaporstat to drop to low fire when the pressure gets to 4 oz.?
is this a comfort or a running cost improvement? is there any downside such as you would have if you adjusted your car to run on too lean a mixture [burnt valves backfiring etc.]
any valve recommendations for 11/4" gas line ?[such as this--http://customer.honeywell.ca/honeywell/ProductInfo.aspx/V4944N1029 ] nbc0 -
Low fire will use more energy because it will not heat the heat exchangers efficiently. You have the right control now.0 -

we do it all the time..
we don't claim it will save money..but it doesn't seem to cost any more either..on feedback from customers this is what we hear..some say it saved money..some say the bills stayed the same..but ALL say the comfort is improved..this is because the steam system was never designed to shut off in mid cycle like the pressure control does..it was designed to damper down the flame then open the damper back up as pressure started to fall..it keeps a constant flow of steam this way..Jim is correct in that heat transfer is less efficient at low fire than high fire..but your also using less gas at that period of time..the bottom line is this..if you can make your boiler mimic the original coal boiler your comfort will be greatly improved..

That series of Peerless atmospheric boilers
is available with a 3-stage firing system called "Mod-u-Pak". Unfortunately their site has no particulars on this setup- maybe give Peerless a call?
