steam boiler banging noise

i recently got a service call that their was a malfunction with a older model steam boiler i arrived and the customer described that when the boiler goes into call for heat their is a "horrific" banging noise that sounds like a metal on metal impact any ideas on what i might be able to check or what it wopuld involve to fix the "horrific" noise

it would be useful to know where exactly the noise is coming from ,and when it started .something must have changed for it to suddenly misbehave.
some easily changeable things are:
pressure[too high because of clogged pigtail or malfunctioning pressuretol]
cleanness of the boiler water
maybe the slope of the pipes has changed due to other work having been done
