Flexable Large Hoses

BAB Member Posts: 118
Commercially available black iron pipe, schedule 40, in standard lengths, with grooved ends & insulated in a good piping shop for quick field assembly using Victaulic mechanical connectors may be a cheaper, safer & more practical approach. You can get heavy duty steam hose but insulated, inexpensive in great lengths? Is this a residential hobby project of heating a hot tub enclosure or is it a serious industrial/commercial application? Makes a difference on your approach. Bromley

    Once upon a time

we used the old Heatway Entran to thaw some frozen slabs.

Had a customer lay out garden hose also to thaw a driveway snowmelt, once. Covered it with concrete blankets, put in an old indirect tank as a glycol HX and fired it by the home boiler. took a few days, but his hose investment was very low :)

Watts Radiants has 1" Onix. Guess you could use multiple runs.

Or go to any hose supplier and ask for MPH (multi purpose hose) if it has the pressure and temperature rating it should be fine. It may not be O2 barrier, but for ocassional emergency use????

    hose

I thought he was looking to transfer the boiler steam output through a flexible hose. That is why I suggested insulated black iron pipe rather than hose. If you have to use hose you better pick the right elastomer, ... EPDM, Neoprene, Buytal rubber, Hypolon, Viton, etc. I do not know the right hose elastomer for constant use with steam. When I worked in a chemical processing plant we grabbed the nearest black polyethyene tubing around, gave the end a shot of live steam, slipped it over the hose barbs, tightened the stainless steel hose clamps and were good to go. I doubt that you transfer a large boiler output the same way through a 4" or 5" connection device. Bromley

    Maybe?

Depending on how long the runs would be and the delta-T you could tolerate, you could possbly do this with 1.25" or 1.5" pex. If you use compression fittings, you could use straight lengths and couple them together as needed. When the pex gets to be in bad shape, you just replace the lengths and salvage the pex connectors. For emergency heat, I wouldn't worry as much about the velocity in the pex or energy consumption of the pump as long as the head loss doesn't get too out of hand. 1.25" might work just fine if you can live with a 40°F dT and you can get the emergency boiler within approx 80 feet of where it connects.

    Radiator hose

Richard we use radiator hose from Napa all the time on freeze ups to couple risers to a cast iron rad or whatever. We get it up to one inch they stock it but maybe your local auto parts store can get it for you in two inch preformed radiator hoses are that size and bigger

    Large hoses

Look in Grainger, they probably have a good selection of hose & quick connect fittings for this. Dewatering pumps and portable sump pump hoses, 2" and up. see pg 1109, 2" good to 180 at 125psi. appx $170.00 for 25ft length w/ fittings item # 1ZMW2 . $326.00 for 100ft w/o fittings, item # 3JT49. good luck, Tim

    Hoses

We use 3 different large diameter hoses with our mobiles. One for DHW, one for non-potable, and one for steam, 25 to 50 foot lengths with end unions. The reel idea wouldn't fly with these hoses though, they're wire wound and thick, easy to lay out install, but a moose to put away.
Oops, 4 types actually, forgot the goodyear hose to bring condensate back to the boiler.
