you might consider welding a fitting with male or female connection. with proper layout & detail preparation it should go smooth as silk. i have threaded 4 " & 5 " by hand with a ratchet. [ not recently ! lol ] there might be an attachment for a 700 & drive bar. do yourself a favor & hire a pipe welder for the day. less work for mother

here is the scene---4" steam main furnishing heat for 7 condo units in
boston. need to reduce to 3" (with inspector's
earlier consent) raise the whole line up 12-18"
to get above new ceiling height and accomodate
    a new wall.
question---is there an in-line threader like the ridgid 700 that can
thread 4" steel while it's hung? i need to make the cut on
the other side of a wall. i know i am probably dreaming
when it comes to the threader, but i have used roust-
about repair couplings before for 2" steam pipe gashes
but can i make a cut on the 4" line, put on a 4" roust-
about clamped to a small piece of 4" with a 4x3 cast 90
    , short piece of 3", to a 90 etc, etc. are roust-abouts
legal in mass? the heat can not be down overnight so

    A 141...

... head will thread 2-1/2" to 4" and they can be driven with a 700 with a square drop in head. But those big heads weigh a ton. I'd second the welding option.

    Yes on Welding

I second those who favor welding. Say "aye". May be a time to bite the bullet but overhead threading of inch and a half is bad enough... Some strategic pre-fab and ok, a fire watch detail but it will be done right.

Condos are a tough business environment for sure.
