thumping gravity feed boiler

Yes, that sounds like that could be it. The sound is similar to a gas water heater "banging" when too much crud has settled to the bottom.

What would be the best way to deal with this? I imagine that I'd need to shut it down and drain it completely, then let it cool down before refilling it. Not sure if there'd be more to it as far as getting all of the sediment out.

    thumping gravity feed boiler

We have a Pennco gas boiler running a gravity feed heating system. The last two seasons there has been thumping noises coming from the basement pipes while the boiler was running. The radiators have all been bled of any air; the noise is definitely not coming from the radiators. The heating system itself seems fine and keeps the house plenty warm, so it hasn't been a major problem, just an annoyance.

    Any ideas?
