Have you ever heard of "8 Way" for a steam boiler additive

right, a rectorseal product
and similar to any of the 'cleaning' products out there for boilers. and if you look at the msds that rector lists for it, you'll see that one of the 'ingredients' is sodium hydroxide/lye. very alkaline, ph14, and a very caustic cleaner. the sodium phosphate is similar to tsp, trisodium phosphate, which i think is a recommended cleaner that burnham cites. and without a very good, monitored filtration system, you'll end up with a mess of crap floating around in the system and clogging anything it can. and despite what rector says, from the research i've done, it shouldn't be left in the system for any more than 72hrs. and i think burnham says 2hrs, and only in the boiler, not the piping
and yes, we have a very upset customer due to our absent minded water treatment guy who left it in there for 2wks. the sock filter was so clogged, that when we lifted it from the tank, it held water with no problem. that's a lotta debris from 20yr old piping0
