Recomended thread sealant for stainless piping
We're doing a project with a fair amount of schedule 40 threaded 304 stainless for an industrial laundry. The piping contains untreated water with laundry chemicals. Does anyone have a suggestion for an appropriate Pipe Dope/thread sealant. We are also planning on using a nickel impregnated teflon tape.
Thank for your help

Thread Sealant
Stainless is a bear. I have used 'Loctite' 567 but NOT with tape too.0 -
We have used teflon and Megaloc or Rector seal # 5 with no problems.0 -
teflon tape & rector seal #5
That's what I used to use pipefitting threaded stainless pipe at the paper mills. Unless it was instrumentation, then it was Loctite 567, sometimes both tape & Loctite

threaded pipe
Threaded pipe is only as good as the threads on the pipe and fittings. Good dies is a must along with good quality cutting oil. 3-5 turns, I like 4, by hand. If you get more than 5 turns or less than 3 replace or readjust the dies. Take rector seal #5 coat male threads and I dab the fittings(female threads) with a SMALL amount of dope. Stainless is a bear, a low RPM threading pipe machine does wonders. When installing pipe, hangers are a must to help hold and anchor the pipe. Using the right size pipe wrenches and making sure to not loosen and retighten a joint more than once.0 -

Definitely
Locktite 567, no tape. Did quite a little process stainless back awhile and it was the best I found. Buy new dies made for stainless.0 -
If you want to cheap out on the 567, permatex # 2 works well for stainless threads. Be very careful when tighning down on stainless as it has an inherent quality of "work hardening" when mechanical friction is applied. Especially when it is the same alloy (304) to alloy (304). You end up galling the threads and nothing short of a plasma torch will break it free.0 -
Gall
The best I have found is Swaglock "Silver Goop" you don't want to know what it cost. They sell it in one ounce tubes. Besides having SS dies we found it helpful to put a variac speed control on the pipe machine to slow it down. A cheap alternative is teflon tape and Johnson's Baby shampoo.0 -
Hemp!
On some of my SS threads i use Hemp (No do not Smoke it, Use it to seal the "Joints") First roughen up the threads then use the hemp. weave it into Threads. never have any leaks when i do it like in the fatherland.Water/liquid hits joint swells up.No leaks.0 -
