E 04 error code/Prestige

We did a house this summer with Radson panels and a Prestige boiler. Solo 110. The owner was last there on New Years and came back Friday to find the whole place frozen solid and the E 04 code on the display of the Prestige. Solid ice in the toilets, faucets frozen, even the hydronic piping was froze and it was antifreeze protected to 10*F.
Checking with Prestige revealed that the control is sensitive to power "glitches" that occur when the utility cycles switchgear. We're talking millisecond type interruptions. Brownout conditions will also freak out the control. Obviously it does not cycle back on after these incidents occur.
Prestige has a "fix" kit for this condition that is available no charge if you provide them with the serial number. Evidently there are a couple different software versions.
I wish that manufacturers would e-mail contractors when something like this pops up. The local distributor never contacted me regarding this so they either don't know or don't care.

E04 lockout
Hey Steve,
I know it's probably too little, too late, but Weil-McLain has a service bulletin on this very item. It's on their website under the "service bulletins" section. It's Series 1 & 2 Ultra boilers. It's dated 2006. Triangle Tube doesn't seem to like updating their website too often. They have news dated on there from March of last year. Sorry to hear about your customer's damage. Good Luck!

Yup
W-M Ultra is prone to this also. They provide a kit with a TDR. A surge protector w/ low voltage protection also helps. Look up Brickwall.com0 -
Thanks Steve,
I work in Rural area and those conditions are common. I Also have a large community nearby which has very unstable power. It the only place I have had a Prestige lock out and is where I have lost 2 out of the 3 tekmars that have failed over the past 10 years.

I remember years ago when we had problems with lock outs. We installed a 24 hour timer on the incoming power to the boiler. It turned off the power for 5 min. every 24 hours in order to reset it. Maybe no a bad idea on houses where no one will be around to reset them.

HAVE THIS?
Steve, do you have possession of this servicemans supplement?
There was a time that only training session attendees were shared this.
E04 Loss of Power
This error will occur if power to the boiler is lost after a lockout has occurred.
The boiler must be manually reset and the original lockout code will be lost.
This error will also occur if the service technician tries to reset a hard
lockout by turning the boiler OFF and then ON as an attempt to reset
the boiler.
Verify polarity and proper ground on incoming 120V power connections
This error may occur in rare cases if there is power interruption, surge
or Dirty voltage. An uninterruptible power supply may be installed on
the incoming voltage to the boiler.

HDE
I quizzed the homeowner about what exactly he did and if anything else showed up on the display. He related that he pushed the reset button, the code disappeared, the boiler started immediately and began making DHW. It satisfied the tank and switched to heating mode without a single hiccup. No other codes showed up since. It's been running normally since Friday afternoon when the arrived for what was supposed to be a fun weekend of snowmobiling at their new "cabin".
This place is in a rather remote location where all the utility lines date back to the late 40's early 50's. The power company replaces stuff as it fries, smokes or breaks off and the homeowner says that happens with more than desired regularity.0 -
had that with ultra
We learned the hard way with a Ultra, We got lucky the central alarm company installed a low temp sensor that goes off at 50 deg and central station calls homeowner. I try to get all my customers to purchase this feature.

been there with the ultra as well
The E04 code with an Ultra indicates a power outage / boiler firing issue. Pretty common here in New England. A time delay box is provided and this has fixed the issue 100% so far

A bit of an investment but,
Back in the day, I remember having to install a few UPS systems (computer power back up and line conditioning unit) on a few Laars Endurance boilers installed in cottages that had similar problems. Solved the power problem, gave them a little battery back up and was easier for us on the worry side.
Fortunately today these units can be purchased for 1/4 the price.0
