High efficiency steam boilers?
With everyones minds on optimum efficiency, what choices are available for our steam customers who want to replace their old steam boiler with a new high efficiency boiler? Like the 94% eff boiler their neighbor with a hydronic system got? Or is 83% all they get?
Thanks for your input,

OK, how about for natural gas?

6% better thermal efficiency than the usual atmospheric boiler, give or take. And you can switch fuels without buying a new boiler- just change the burner and a few minor trim items. The gas burner used is the Carlin EZ-Gas; for oil you can get the usual Beckett, Carlin or Riello burners.

cool, thanks
One more question; What's the max efficiency for a steam boiler of about 1.5 mil BTU. I'm considering bidding with a Weil LGB but the property owner wants the most eff possible

that LGB would be about the least efficient
considering the standby stack losses, back losses off the burners, Losses off the jacket, etc. With a boiler that size, you should be looking at a wetback 3 pass steel boiler with a modulating power burner, or a couple of smaller steel or Cast iron boilers that are 3 pass designs, if possible, that are stage fired or modulated. I have tested older Burnham cast iron vertical section boilers that achieve 84 % efficiencies on an analyzer at low to mid fire. A 3 pass boiler would probably do even better on low fire since the heat exchanger would be better utilized I would think.

Hey thanks, I don't know much about 3 pass boilers but I guess I'd better do some research
Thanks,

This is the only residential 3-pass steamer being made so far. For residential hot-water check out the Biasi, Buderus G115, Burnham MPO, Slant/Fin Eutectic, Solaia and others.
