Webster dirt strainer

This is a 2 pipe low pressure steam system and this webster dirt strainer is mounted on top of a boiler return trap. The top of the webster dirt strainer then previously was piped back into a tee before the relief valve of the boiler. There is a 2nd boiler return trap with a vent on top as expected but I have never seen this Webster dirt strainer before on a system. There is a wing nut on top of it to take apart for cleaning. If anyone knows what it's funtion is I would appreciate it.
