    Steam Boiler

I have an American Standard A-3 Steam Boiler, that was installed back in 1968. I upgraded the original burner with a standard Beckett burner 12 years ago. I have no issues or problems with the boiler. I have the following questions.
    1. Should I be thinking of replacing the boiler because of its age? My wife and I are both still working and could afford to do it.
    2. Is there any advantage to converting to hot water baseboard?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    boiler install

yes time to think about upgrading the boiler no to converting to hot baseboard does not hold the heat like radiators and if you cannot convert the rads easily it will be an expensive job

    what is your

heating bill like? If you are concerned about it leaking...pretty slim chance there, that boiler is bullet proof... The upgrade would be nice but the make sure the contractor knows steam. I would stick w/ the steam. kpc

Question 1 ans. Yes. but as kpc said you have to make sure that the contractor that you are considering knows steam and knows it well ( the best ways i know of are recomendations from people you trust or reading enough about steam to know if the contractor really knows steam or just sounds like he knows. changing it while you are both still employed may make the difference between getting it done or not and the eff.of the newer equipment is both cost effective and good for the environment.
    Question 2 ans. NO!

    Oil Hog

As others have said get it replaced by someone who knows steam. This boiler is an oil hog. Every customer who has had one replaced has told me they saved considerable amounts of oil. I don't have hard numbers to give you but the customer feedback is greater replacing this boiler than others we replace.

    Steam Boiler

Thanks for the advice. We like the radiators and will keep them. What are the better makes of boilers that I should look at? I've heard alot of new systems being put in are Boderus Boilers.
  • New steam boiler

I would put in a new steam boiler with a radiant zone off the bottom. Put radiant in the living room and bathroom, that way when it isn't that cold out, in the spring and fall, you could just heat those areas without sending steam up to all your radiators. Thanks, Bob Gagnon
