  • THe bots have been working OT....

Do NOT click on any of the links that look suspicious.

As soon as you do, they've got access to your PC and will plant trojan horses, viruses, spy ware etc.

    Some peoples kids...

    pumps & matching thongs....

    then we'd have something worthwhile!
  • Dan and Invision are aware...

I called Dan and let him know. He's out of town, but aware of it and working on it with Invision.

  • guys, this isn't about fun.

It's about identity theft, selling credit card numbers, stealing passwords, sending spam... all kinds of stuff, mostly to do with money and people you don't want to play with, but most certainly not about fun.

These viruses and trojans are BIG business. Anything they can do to infect more computers they will do. Stay away from links and attachments that seem suspicious!! They are not "funny". They are a one way trip to identity theft.

Not to jump on you Scott, but this stuff is serious and I just want to make sure you all understand that. This is not a 16 year old in a basement. This is the russian mafia or other such groups making millions and millions of dollars a year stealing other people's lives.
  • 500 and counting

in my e-mail what do we do is there some way to stop this? It just keeps coming and I can't send an e-mail because my system is jammmed. No way to reach Dan to let him know, I hope he is aware this is happening.
  • Sorry I

posted before I read Marks posting that he called Dan. I will wait patiently.

  • If you reply to one of the infected threads, under the text box you type messages into, you can uncheck the "notify me by email" box to stop getting responses on those threads at least..

    Dan is on the road

Invision is aware of what is going on and they are trying to stop the bots.

As has been said, DO NOT open ANY of those links.

    Text Codes

The text codes at the bottom of the posts need to be bitmaps, not text that can be copied and pasted by a computer program automatically.

I am glad I stopped checking the "notify" box a while ago.

    Notify Box

That notify box is bad news. I'll never check that, and this is why. Too easy for these idiots to get the email addresses, which is why I use a fake one here.

They keep doing this, because it works! People click on the links......still after decades of warning, people click on links.

    Nasty!

These viruses are criminal in every sense of the word. I heard that the Pentagon gets hit millions of times a day with all sorts of cyberspace nasties.

I will be seeing Dan in a few hours. I can hear the exasperation in his voice already!

  • What can you

do to stop this.My e-mail has over 500 of these and just keeps coming. Cox cable states that I have a virus, my computer people have no answer. This is insanity there should be some law against this stuff.

I have deleted everything I can in my computer and it just keeps coming.

    Notify box

You'd need to uncheck the notify box in each thread. That notify box sends an email every time someone posts to that thread.....whether it's a real post or a spam post. I think at this point, you'd need to go into each of the threads, post something and uncheck that box.

Aren't you guys using anti-spyware stuff?

I've been using this one from Lavasoft for several years and every couple of weeks it deletes a bunch of crap from my hard drive.

    And it's free.

  • If it deletes a bunch of stuff every couple weeks, you need to be more careful about the sites you visit ;)

also be aware that is not anti-virus. That is anti-spyware and it gives some protection, but it doesn't make you invulnerable. You have a couple of choices:

    1. Get a firewall and learn how to use it. Set it up.
    2. Do a clean install of windows, formatting the disks, the whole nine yards. Do not connect to the internet without the firewall up and running. Immediately download all your security patches.
    3. Install Adaware or Spybot, and any other anti-virus that meets your fancy
    4. Stop going to "iffy" sites, never click links you get in emails no matter what they say (always type an address into your address bar yourself), never open attachments unless you are very, very sure of its source (such as, your grandmother TOOK this picture, and sent it to you with a personal note you KNOW she had to have written).
    4. Repeat every six months or so.

    Or, buy a mac ;)

    Another measure

You might also download the (free) McAfee SiteAdvisor - it helps identify the general safety of sites returned in a web search. Even so, every trick in the toolkit is only 100% effective for yesterday's rubbish. Heuristic anti-mal-ware will still leave holes.

The reason for the relatively virus-free state of Macs is mostly to do with Apple's small footprint in the marketplace. If everyone were running Macs, we would see loads of Mac-specific mal-ware, instead of the occasional (but still ugly) attack in the Mac community. The moral of that story - don't encourage loads of people to buy Macs.
