that I don't know the complete answer for, and I have some questions about myself.
There is the question of whether the fuel is being burned completely so that it is not wasted, and there is the question of whether the heat from that combustion is being transferred into the water circulating through your house, instead of going up the stack, and then there is the question of whether the heat in the circulating water is being transferred into your living area efficiently.
If you were to insert a thermometer in your boiler's smoke pipe, you would know the temperature of your stack but that's about it. An experienced guy could deduce something from that alone, but not enough.
You should have your boiler serviced by a reputable person who will take it apart, clean it and use instruments (which include measuring the stack temperature) to set it up so that it is running as efficiently as possible.

how can I determine the eff of my boiler
I was told that if you insert a thermometer in the smokepipe of a boiler while it is running, this could help me determine how efficient my gas boiler is running. Can anyone provide me with some deails on what to do with the temperature reading and how to use it to determine the eff. Thank you.0 -
yes
it's a little more complicated, you need to know the Co2 also. Then, you need the handy little slide chart that comes with the combustion kit.
