Lets not discuss prices but...

In another thread there was discussion of prices to do this or that. Since being in my own business for near 15yrs now I found I was charging way way to little for most jobs.
For instance: ever get to a job an see a 2' step up to the Bilco basement door and then 12 crabby weak steps down? More work for you and not figures into the price.
Or how about putting an oil tank in the basement only to find out the only way for the fill and vent is thru a field stone wall.
Or the only entrance to bring that 4 section cast iron boiler into the house is accross the 12x12 ceramic tile floor? That job was one I am glad I did not get because the guy that did it replaced the kitchen floor as well!
Even to replace a Fan-Limit-switch. location: ceiling hung or wet crawl space.
I recently chatted with a tow truck driver and got an education there. What is the weight of the disabled vehicle? Speed of the road?(higher speed more dangerous) night or day? snow, rain or sunshine? My service van in the supermarket parking lot may be x$ but breakdown on the interstate, on a snowy night and the same van with the same company tow truck might be 3x or 4x just to get it to his shop!

just my 25 cents

    ahhh

that's why you and I get paid the big bucks; we sniff this stuff out FIRST, and add in whatever extra labor will be required.

If this stuff was easy, every Tom, **** and Harry would try out this stuff for a living.

Every time I complain about my position in life I just consider the alternative and the subsequent reduction in pay that would go along with it.

    Keep your chin up!

You get a pretty good idea what the other guys are charging when the cust says " the other guy quoted me $X" and I try to base my install price on that and move on from there. Pumping away, air elimination, ODR, indirect, iso valves, smart controls, higher efficiency, and so on. This way I am competitive and yet offer the bells & whistles the other guy does not. The cust can then pick & choose the extras.
