Carlin g3b conversion on peerless EC steam boiler

T T and run the 120 volts from the relay to L1 and L2 on the tray. That will mean that the spill switch is in theory acting as a jumper, but if it opens the burner will shut down. Simple and safe.

Carlin g3b conversion on peerless steam ec boiler

I am thinking of converting from my riello f40 burner to a carlin gb3. I currently am firing at a .95 gph rate for the Peerless boiler EC-03. My questions are:

Do I need to replace the draft damper with a double swing?

Should I match my firing rate of oil with a 144,000btu gas burn?

Will I get less efficiency with the gas burn as the boiler was designed for oil intent?

Is the carlin EZ gas burner possibly better for this than the gb3?

    Thanks.

  • Carlin G3B is a great burner

Yes you have to replace the barometric to a double swing.

Is this a steam or FHW either way I would be sure and do a heat loss and if steam check your square feet of radiation.

The numbers on oil is between 138,000 to 140,000 per GPH.

Properly set up and fine tuned the G3B should give you between 80 to 83% combustion efficiency. It is important that you know how to properly install and set up a power gas conversion burner.

I personally prefer the G3B only because I have more experience with it than the newer EZ. One thing the G3B uses a hot surface igniter versus the EZ is direct spark ignition. Some HSI systems are troublesome do to igniter failure. I have had real good results however with the G3B.

I agree with Tim that the G3B is/was a great burner, however I've used the EZ Gas and it will work great in that application. You need to make the appropriate changes that Tim listed. Easy enough to check what the current burner is firing into the boiler remember that Riello has a higher pump pressure, need to take that into account after finding out what the nozzle is. If everything is heating properly at that rate sizing the burner accordingly should not be a problem.

Understood, I already compensated the gph of the riello with the .95 rating. Thanks for the insight on the burner.

Tim it is steam. With the double swing damper I am going to install a spill switch. Tim, thank you also for the info.

Here is my next question, Since it is steam I have the 24V circuit for the boiler on a honeywell RA89A. This handles all the boiler trips, cycling etc.. So the burner only gets 120V from the RA89A relay. Now with the Gb3 I have a 24V circuit on its own controller (honeywell S89) that needs to be satisfied. My original thought was jump the terminals for a constant 24V when 120V intiated. (Good idea/bad idea). Now with a spill switch on the double swing damper I will have a thermal switch interruption of the 24V circuit of the G3b. Or finally my last idea, take the thermostat 24V circuit run it in parallel to the burner's 24V circuit and the boilers honeywell RA89A. this way the 24V circuits of both will function together on a close of the thermstat. This seems unnecessary as the RA89A is already doing the job.

    target wall

Last question/ idea. Since the carlin gas burner has about a 1/3 amount of radiant heat as the riello would it be fruitfull to remove the target wall. Or would I be upsetting the water circulation?
