this type of client ever go to a restaurant? Can you imagine giving the tip prior to the bill and then asking for it back once the bill arrives? Oh...and can you refill my tea?

I would have the tech send the money back with a note that explains how this is the last time we intend to service your equipment. I hope that we are never in the area of this particular customer.

    Some customers

    One of our techs was at a house with no heat. The problem was that the homeowner had done some work to the system and the loops were full of air. The homeowner was told that the pipes needed to be purged and that the work was billable. When the tech was finished, the homeowner tipped him $20! Nice huh?

    Well, the other day the customer calls in and says out tech left some tools there and asked us to have the tech call him. The tech called and said he didn't remember leaving tools there and that he doesn't think he is missing any. They customer said, "Well, the real reason I called is I want my tip back". It seems he figured that if he tipped the tech, the tech would write down something so he wouldn't be billed. When the bill arrived he decided it didn't work so he wanted the tip money back.

    The tech gave him an ear full and said he would drop the money off next time he was in the neighborhood. Of course, as luck would have it, he hasn't been in that area again :)

    Unfortunately, down here on the gold coast of CT, we get a lot of customers who think all that matters is them and what they want. Very "ME" centered here.

    at least ones that could be printed here.

    Every once in awhile you got to "fire" a customer. This would be one.

    A THIEF

    That customer is a THIEF!!!!!! plain and simple. To attempt to bribe the tech then to call under the guise of forgotten tools. If my boss made the choice to keep this customer he would have to fire me because I would refuse to go to the crook's house. I would also gladly send the tip back, I don't need dishonest money.

    this was my MONDAY

    We are ivolved in a old mansion renovation 24K SQF home alot of radiant and snowmelt also plumbing redo 15 bathrooms.

    The homeowner gives a envelope to the builder with a tip for my men on the job 4 guys. It had 2,000.00 in it 500 each. Very nice homeowner (I never got tips like that). The builder takes 1500 and puts it in his pocket then gives my head mech on the job 500 and says dont tell anybody.Or this is what I think happened.

    The other day word got out and I walked into a fist fight between not only my men but the builder. Now the builder is calling my head mech a thief and vise versa. The only solution is me diging into my pocket and giving them 500 each. If this gets back to the homeowner nobody looks good.

    This is a real sore spot with me.I normaly only have one helper and myself.My policy is normal to refuse tips
    from customers,if you want to give my helper one fine
    but don't exspect anything extra for it.Its also exspected for my helper to tell me he got a tip,i don't care how much,its his,but let me know.Because if the customer for some reason comes back with a problem with it,at least i know.The helper i had before the one i have now i fired for takeing tips and doing special favors for the customer behind my back.

    I left the last real job I had because the boss refused to fire a customer. "Oh, I can't do that." That was just about 10 years ago. I just fired one a week or so ago myself. Never calls me to service the system, only when it's broke, always whines ABOUT being broke and is a slow pay besides. My bills mysteriously get lost. Uh huh...

    I hadn't heard from them in about a year and they call me up 5:00 on Sunday night and expect me to come running. I refered them to my competition. ;)

    Your right sometimes its just not worth the grief
    to keep a customer happy,and its not only the ones who are slow payers.
    Had a job last year gut out of a bar with apartments upstairs,guy was a pita head to toe,we had to put cardboard
    in the windows every night,we were'nt suppose to talk to the nieghbors at all,and the guy just could'nt understand why i did everything to code,kept on asking can't we cheat a little,never was around when we needed him to decide something.
    We finished all the rough we were contracted
    to do and left.Called me to bid on the finish and i
    told him we were to busy at the time.
    Funny thing is we had our rough inspection
    and passed with no problems,funny thing is i heard from the inspector it did'nt go so well for the finish one thoe.

    Yeah, I love that one.

    We work very close to the NY border hear, just a half hour from the city. In NY tipping is expected everywhere. It's a part of life. A lot of people in our area came from NY. They get very confused when you refuse a tip, some even seem insulted. For years I refused them, but it's so much work I decided it's easier to take them than to argue about it.

    Much of my customer base is very personal to me, and I often get tips...usually in the form of a plate of cookies or a loaf of fresh bread, a quart of fresh honey, a dozen eggs...the other day I was given a very nice pair of leather gloves. They are gifts of appreciation and I accept them because they are not buying me off in any way. If I had taken the twenty in the original post and they had asked for it back I'd probably give them half of it...they could have either the left or right half of the twenty dollar bill.

    tips

    I used to work where Paul works. The people get confused then angry when you don't accept the tip. You take it smile and look at it when you get in the truck. One time when I was a wee helper back Wall Street's bedroom a guy called 3pm Christmas eve looking to get his kitchen installed. The boss said he was just locking up but would reffer it to the lads. The only unmarried mechanic and my self went on the call and when we finished he haned us each an envelope and said merry Christmas. The envelopes had 10 brand new 100 dollar bills each.

    little meaning to me, i'd'a taken the job just for the pr in it. and if i was rewarded like that, i'd'a made a point of personally being on-call for the guy
