Time for a new boiler?

As mentioned in the other post, the thermal efficiency of your old "beast" is the point to consider, along with a low efficiency rating of 80%. Just from a consumption standpoint, is it well time to consider replacement.

    Time for a new boiler?

We’ve got a Weil-McLain No. 40 (0-40-9) boiler (5300 sq. ft. steam) with a Gordon-Piatt gas-oil burner, in a 1927 vintage 20 unit apartment building with a two-pipe steam system. This boiler is probably 40 years old (the burner is newer), but is running well. We’re trying to figure out if it is time to replace the boiler. The questions are would a new boiler be more efficient, and are we soon heading toward any boiler problems? Gas analyzer results are 81% efficiency on gas, and 83.9% efficiency on oil. These look to me about the same as for new boilers, or am I comparing the wrong numbers?

    new boiler

there are to differant nos to consider 1st is the effiency of burning the fuel and the 2nd is the effiency of heating the water considering that boilers are smaller todaythat means less water that has to be turned to steam
