What makes an oil burner trip out?

I have an oil heater in the shop of a house we recently purchased. I tried it out briefly when we moved in and it seemed to work fine. Now I need to heat the shop and it won't work. The burner will run for a minute, then trip out. If I press the reset button, it will run for a bit again. However, it does not seem to be generating any heat even in that brief interval. What should I be checking?

nothing, contact an oil heat professional to repair unit. Oil is nothing to play with if you do not know what you are doing.

    Yep

Most calls involve replace filter , replace nozzle , use 5k dollar combustion analyzer and set air shutters. I consider this service a real bargin , and I'm in the business. Modern combustion analyzers cannot be matched. - M

    Thanks

Sorry to ignore the first replies, but I checked out the filter and nozzle as suggested. Filter was totally fully of junk and the nozzle was plugged as well. They have probably not been touched in years. Thanks for the tips.

    Now you need

a pro- to make sure the burner's combustion is efficient and safe, using a digital analyzer. Have him replace the nozzle while he's there, if it hasn't been touched in years it probably has some wear on it.
